Black History Month: Free Lesson

by | Feb 6, 2025 | Homeschool Tips

I have a gift for you! In honor of Black History Month 2025, I have put together a lesson plan to teach your child about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. This lesson plan is in the style of our Yellow level history programs, and is completely new, not included in the programs we currently offer.

What does it include?

Your free lesson plan is a literature-based unit study all about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. The lesson is based on A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman by David A. Adler, illustrated by Samuel Byrd. This beautiful book tells the life story of Harriet Tubman, her own journey from slavery to freedom and how she helped many other enslaved people to escape to Canada.

The lesson plans will have your child learning not just history, but music, comparative literature, art, science, and geography. We also provide a beautiful quote for your child to use as copywork this month, so they can improve their handwriting, spelling, and grammar. This lesson is highly adaptable, and the go-along activities could be used with other biographies of Harriet Tubman, if your child is older and ready for more mature books.

Speaking of books, we also include a list of other books about the Underground Railroad that you can enjoy with your child to take the lesson further.

Why?

Why give away a lesson? It just feels like the right thing to do. Harriet Tubman is an American hero and we choose to honor her and her story this month by sharing this free lesson plan with you.  As always, our lesson plans are appropriate for a range of ages, and learning styles. This program is designed to be used with students ages 5-10, with or without learning disabilities and neurodiversity. However, substituting a different biography will raise the age level of the program and allow you to use it with all of your students.
